frog calls

redfonix Jul 22, 2004 05:12 PM

I've got some NA green tree frogs and some WTFs (separate tanks), and I'm trying to get them to make their breeding calls. I've tried playing some recorded frog calls (respective to their species) to the frogs through my computer speakers in their room, but they didn't seem to have any reaction. Does anyone have any tips on how to get GTFs or WTFs to start calling?

well, There are tonnes of thins you could try! I have a pair of whites right now, and besides croaking at the female every night, the male croaks at, my hair dryer, my "ocean noises cd" my alarm clock(the beep-beep-beep kind), when i make a "waark-waaark-waaaaark noise and whenever our neighbour drives his motor cycle up the driveway. I'm positive these arent calls out of fear because its a completly different call thatn what he makes when the cat walks by (more of a kweeep-kewwwp noise), and it is the same noise he makes to the female. do you have a pair? maybe he will only make noise to impress another frog? and are the noises you are playing for him mating calls or fear calls? also he could be australlian and the calls are form the indonesian variety, there fore he dosent understand it??? anyways, those are just a few ideas off the top of my head...oh also how old is he? or are you even sure it is a he? only the males will really croak (females do to but it isnt as impressive)

Thanks for the reply! I only have one WTF right now, I've had him for about a month, but I'm not sure how old he is exactly. I assume it's a male because of the loose skin around the neck, and I've heard him make a few abrupt sounds that are similiar to the recordings I've downloaded. You're probably right that interaction with females could help stimulate his call, I'll try looking for one.

Which actually leads me to another question, I havn't seen any adults (WTF) at my local petshops lately. However, there were some baby WTF's (about an inch long) that were for sale. I wouldn't house these little guys with my voracious adult, but how long would it take for these babies to reach adulthood? Also, is there care alot more difficult than adults?

Thanks,
Sean
