musk turtle egg

fhawk00 Jul 22, 2004 07:43 PM

I've had a musk turtle for about 6 months and nothing out of the ordinary has happened. I got home from work today though, and there was one egg laying on the bottom of the turtle tank. I have two questions, could this one egg actually be fertilized and will it be ok that it was underwater for possibly up to 8 hours. What should i do with it, i took it out of the water and have it in a cup, i know i have read to keep it in moist soil or something and at around 80 degrees, but is that enough. Any help would be great, i just didn't quite expect to see an egg in the tank and am not really prepared for this type of situation.

The egg is still quite possibly good. They can endure being submerged for a surprising length of time. Also, female can lay fertile eggs for some time after being with a male.
Your set up sounds fine except that I would raise the temperature to about 84.
