Still no luck..(Breeding advice needed!)

Evangelus Jul 22, 2004 08:05 PM

Hey, guys!

I haven't posted in very long time(This is BlizzardLeopard). But, anyway.. I've been doing everything I can for the longest time to attempt to breed my leos and nothing seems to work. I know for a fact that they are Male and Female and that they are of breeding age and weight. I've even tried a cooling period(Which really isn't necessary..) and for some reason, my female leo just doesn't like my male, lol. My male knows just what to do.. I put him in, he sniffs around, licks his lips(tasting the female pheremones) and begins to rattle his tail as he attempts to mate with my female.. My female obviously does not want to breed because she stands on all fours really high and begins to swish her tail around slowly. If the male begins to nip at her tail(As they normally do-- Working their way up to the neck..), my female licks the male's face, preparing to bite.. I'm afraid to leave them alone for the night because he may continue trying and not only stress her out, but hurt himself..

Is there anything that you can suggest? She's not interested in being bred to at all.. Any reason why? Will I ever be able to breed these two? I don't think this plays any sort of role in it, but the male is Albino and the female is a hypo tangerine. Thanks for your help, I appreciate any tips/advice!

(Sorry so long..)

Breeding can get pretty brutal. It sounds normal to me. Just let them do their thing. Watch them if they really start to fight. Allow for a lot of passion and you'll be able to tell when it really does turns ugly.

Since I put all my geckos in a 20 gallon my male had been very fierce.. but the females were accepting it.. not bugging them.
I mistakenly broke them up a few times and they're not doing it right now, hopefully he'll start mating again.. I wasn't aware it was so violent.

Sometimes when the females stand up on all fours its just to look bigger, if she does bite him tap her on the back of her neck a few times gently and she'll let go..she couldnt cause much damage unless she really wanted to, you say you moved recently? so they may be stressed out, it took me 9 months to finalaly fine the right male for trinity, all that time she was completely brutal to the other males, some females may take longer but eventually they will breed, how much does Ron weigh?

sometimes the weight of the female can cause her to not want to breed, i recently baught another HUGE hypo tang from Alberto, she's 81 grams and whacked harley so hard in the face with her tail that he almost toppled over, so i've decided to not breed her till next season,

what you may want to do is, put them in the same tank but with a divider in the middle, make some holes at the bottom of it so they can smell eachother, this may drive them to breed, you'll probably notice one of them up against it, when you see this try again, if nothing, then i would suggest waiting untill next season

Thanks everyone, tons! I'll take all of your advice. And Dan, I don't have a digital scale, but I'm estimating that Ron weighs maybe around 72 grams. Thanks again, everyone-- Good to talk to you again, Dan.

The signs all point to a hot female, but it could be a possibilty that she just dosent like your male. You might try getting another male to give her more of a selection. But if she dosen't breed with him she's most likely a hot female.

rhachodactylus Jul 24, 2004 01:35 AM

Befor you post and say she is a "Hot" female, read up on them and what that phrase actually means, there is no such thing as a hot female..hot females are not sgressive, just more finicky than others, they take more to develope thir reproduction system, the gecko she has is over a year old, she would know if she was a "hot" female

some females just dont take well to breeding, like i said, my female who is the sweetest gecko in the world took 8-9 months to finally breed, the divider idea works best, i have seen much succes with it, but if that doesnt work, she may need another season

dont spaz im just putting my 2 cents in

Thanks again, Dan.

Yeah, I'll be getting a male SHT soon for her to breed with instead for my birthday to at least give her more options. (Oh, Dan, I'm getting another baby today, lol.) I'll take your adive and try the methods you suggested. Thanks much.

No problem Britney anytime

im guessing by baby you meant..leopard gecko...lol what morph?

Evangelus Jul 24, 2004 06:27 PM

LOL, yeah, Leopard Gecko.

Well, it depends on how this little guy/girl's pattern turns out, but it looks like it could possibly be a SHT if his/her's little bands fade off nicely(They've already started fading). I picked the little baby up a few hours ago from the store and it's already eating for me. We moved to a new house so our camera isn't hooked up yet, but once it is I'll show you some pics. I got the baby from the Petco where I found Ron(I had to get this baby..) When I show you pics you'll see why. Take care, Dan.
