One egg always goes bad???

Shlacon Jul 22, 2004 11:56 PM

I have a female crested that has layed three clutchs for me so far this season. The first clutch grew but at about 6 weeks both eggs turned orange in color. The other two clutchs seem to have one egg that looks good, and one thats orangish. I am pretty new to all this, is this normal, is there something I can do to help?? Any thoughts or ideas would be awesome!!
Thanks!

How are you incubating them and how old is your female crested. Also what is her diet like, is she really healthy at breeding time? The only suggestions I have are to make sure you have the right incubating environment and that the temps are not too high. Also that your mama cresty is getting well supplimented and gut loaded prey items. Be sure she gets enough calcium (every feeding) and vitamins (once about every ten days). Don't mix calcium and vitamins as some tend to take away from the other. Though this is probably not the problem it will ensure your female is as healthy as she can be. If this is her first year of breeding it also possible it will get better next year. My first year was a disaster. The next was VERY good and eggs were popping out like crazy and hatching every time. Best of luck to you and mama cresty.

The female is just over a year old, feed and supplemented almost everyday. Incubating temp is 74 degrees give or take a degree.
She looks great, good weight, alert, clean nothing that would seem to be a problem. One egg out of every clutch so far turns reddish orange within the first week. I have yet to have any eggs from her hatch. I spent alot of money getting her from a top of the line breeder! I just hope everything starts working soon!
Thanks for you reply and your info!

The gecko being only a year old is probably OK, I guess it really depends more on the weight than anything else. I wouldn't worry too much if she isn't a major producer this year being so young. You might raise the temps in the incubator to about 78-79F just not over 80F. That's what temps I use and have had a 99% hatch this year. Also wondering if you have her paired up with the male full time and if there are other females in the group? It could be stress if it is just her and the male and they are full time partners. I keep small groups 1.3 but only have the males in for about 1-2 months at a time. Just a thought.

She was paired with a male, full time. There were no there females in that group. I have since changed the male just to see what happens. Thanks for your help!
