A couple of common Arizona critters this time of year...

JDM Jul 23, 2004 02:37 AM

Went out a last Friday after a light rain and saw several of these:

They are always fun to see. They are very large and when they hop they almost look like little sumo wrestlers crossing the road.

I also enjoy seeing banded geckos:

These animals are both fairly common in central Arizona, but some from other states may appreciate seeing them.

Great finds! I am also in AZ but down in Portal at the Southwest Research Station. I am looking to find some of those banded geckos on my way home. Do you have any suggestions on where to spot them?

Well, I dont know what is on your way home, but if you can pass through just about any part of the sonoran desert at night you will have a good chance of finding them along roads at night.

I lived in Ft. Riley in the early 80's. I was a kid at the time and lived with my father who was in the military. I beleive I lived there about the same time that Kerby was stationed there. I loved it! I liked it just as much as Ft. Huachuca in southern Arizona in the mid 80's.

I was a regular out in and around alma, and all roads going west towards riley in several counties. Like I think kerby said, heck, we might of passed each other at one time. THEN tack on 6 trips to the southern arizona of the huachucas and other ranges..........my regret is that since i got bit by the west texas bug, i haven't broaden my horizen of other areas for the past decade and 1/2.
