Eastern or Western

NomadOfTheHills Jul 23, 2004 09:36 AM

I am looking to get a hog in late september. I live in an area where easterns occur normally, but Neherpaddict has been adviseing me to get a western as they are easier for a first time hog owner. I want to know if it is possible for a first itme hog owner to successfully keep an eastern, or will it just be better for me to get a western? I have access to toads.

I do see your preferance for easterns though, they are beautiful and someday I would like to get one but my western is very cool too. and easy!!!

I guess, a western would be ok. BTW, how much do they cost normally? I need to know how much to save up or whether I won't need to.

I got mine, a nice locality animal, for 75 plus shipping (which was expensive because it was january and had to ship to NY). 60-100 depending on the animal (color, sex, breeder) seems about average.

Personally, I like westerns. They're an easy snake to care for, to feed, ... and they're just too darn cute!

I think it depends on your keeping of snakes. I was only 13 when I got my first hog, and it was eastern, wc, and very easy to keep. the second one was the same. I don't think that they are really much harder, as long as you have toads and they trust you. A snake that is stressed is harder to keep, though. Be careful what you get.
