An interesting new product

shiveley Jul 23, 2004 11:08 AM

I just saw this and thought that some might find it interesting. Sure simplifies the process of feeding hay/grass to your tortoise... Anyway, I've tried their other products and have always been satisfied. I'm probaby going to give this a try as well.

Cool... another commercial diet that looks usable.
Kinda looks like 'alfalfa blocks' catered to tortoise folk. Excellent marketing.

It's actually just cut hay. No blocks. I just thought that it was a good idea because it is kind of a pain to cut large amounts of hay into small pieces. Yeah, it is a commercial diet, in that I would be buying it from someone and not growing it myself. But it is not processed, other than being cut into smaller pieces. And to me, that sounds like a good thing. When you go through a lot of hay it sure simplifies things if you don't have to be constantly cutting it down to usable portions. Anyway, this is just my opinion on the matter.

Ecotherm makes something similar called nutri-bale and nutri-pellets. The pellets are basically I think timothy and orchard (Sorry the bottle is not here for me to list the exact ingredients) and the nutribale is bermuda, big blue stem and timothy hay. It is a bale of hay my guys love it

I went to the Ectotherm site and saw the Nutri-Bales, but I wasn't able to find anything called, or resembling, Nutri-Pellets. Are you sure that it was from Ectotherm? I saw that they carry something called Grassland Tortoise Yummies, but they did not appear to resemble what you were referring to.

tuwhada Jul 23, 2004 02:22 PM

Yeah it is ectotherm. It is not on their site though I am not sure why. I only just got it this weekend at the reptile expo in New York. I just tried it out today for my guys so I don't know if they will eat it. If they do it will be fed to them only if I am short on greens or something like that. basically it is just a hay pellet (almost looks like a rabbit pellet). That is at home though so I don't know the exact ingredients but I know it was 1 or 2 grasses or hay or something htat I knew was a good diet for my guys.

As for the yummies. I have used them. They too I only use as a treat or if I am low on greens. They like the cactus and occasionally will eat the grassland one. I also got the forest one for my boxie but she has not eaten it yet. Oh and hte cricket yummies are great for crickets.....

Yeah, I guess that they wouldn't be suitable for everyday use given that most pellets lack adequate long-stem fiber.

Been buying the same stuff from Walkabout Farms for over a year.
Excellent product for adding fiber to yuor torts greens salad.

I heard that walkabout farms is no longer selling to consumers. Just to professionals, I think. YOu may want to look into that!

Too bad they quit taking new customers, I thought some of their products sounded interesting...
