do you not have a Home Depot or Lowes around? i can get a 40lb bag for $2.19 there.

Not on the west coast. It's like finding a needle in a haystack. And I haven't had any luck finding the needle either =P

I have an alternative for you. Go to your local Homet Depot, Lowes or Fred Meyer and get a bag of "Whitney Farms Bark Mulch" I have been using it for more than a year now and it works great and Tegus "dig it" (sorry). I had to find an alternative since Cypress is not really available here on the west coast. Another way to go is to order it from the Bean Farm. Beanfarm.com they ship it if you are set on Cypress. Best of Luck Dan!

Home Depot, Orchard Supply, Walmart, Target...no luck, no Cypress. Nor any Whitney Farms Bark Mulch for that matter. I ended up shelling out for ZooMed's Cypress and mixed it with Orchid Bark from Orchard.

Has anyone been able to find a nursery that will order it for us in Bay Area, CA??

thought i would say that i use Sandy Loam, or Screened Soil for my larger tegus. for my little babies i use Cypress but once they hit about 2' i switch them over the dirt. they seem to like the dirt a lot better too. i just go to a landscaping co. and get them to fill up my truck. normally about 2cu.yards of it

I feel your pain. I am in the same boat. I live in riverside county (southern California) so I am also having troubles finding any of the substrates. I am just finishing my tegu's new two-story cage that is 6Lx3Wx4H so I am going to require a lot of substrate. I don’t know what I am going to do. I am thinking about using dirt but I really don’t want to. What are you going to do?

I drove almost an hour each way to try a different home depot, and still no luck, not even that whitney farms bark mulch. Even that bean farm is no cheaper once you add the shipping. Does soaking it in hot water really clean it? I guess if I can clean it I'll have to suck it up and give petco a huge chunk of my paycheck for my new cage is 6x2.5x2.5. Thanks anyways.

I never thougt it would be this hard to find the right type of substrate. this really sucks. I think i am going just buy some soil and try that out. well good luck to you.

If you can find sandy loam, it's like river sand, they love it. It holds moisture well and compacts well so they can make dens etc. I first read about it on Pro Exotics website suggested for monitors and found it to be a very usable substrate. I think you Tegu will like it. As long as they can dig they are happy
