"Spotnose"?

KelliH Jul 23, 2004 03:09 PM

We hatched a few of these out this year. All of them have 2 very distinct spots on either side of the "nose", some also have a spot in the middle. All of them are really nice high yellow/gold with busy patterns and really light colored heads. I have seen a picture of Tracy Barker's hatchling spotnose and these look similar. Our's are probably just a random thing but I still think they are cool. Anyone else ever have these "spotties" hatch out randomly?

I have a large female with two spots identical those in your picture. I don't think they mean anything, but I think it looks cool.

Yeah, I figured it was a random thing too. They're really pretty snakes though. I'm sure we will hang onto a pair or trio of them, just to see what they produce.

A couple of people here have het for albinos with the same markings, (can't remember who) and I have a couple of Pastel/Spider siblings that have similar marks, and they are very bright/light colored animals.

Bachman...i have a comment and a very loose theory. Could it be that it might be 2 diff. genetic forms of 'albinism'. Like one be simple recessive and another co-dominant...

My animals that have the marks are 100% normals.

This hatchling was the only one in a clutch of seven with the single spot in the middle of its nose, however the other six siblings had the "mustache" markings to various degrees. They are the offspring of a 50% het stripe male breed to a normal female, neither parent exhibits this trait...-Mike

I'm pretty sure that the Collette Sutherland proved a line to be an inheritable trait.. I forget if it was recessive, co-dominant or dominant, but I do believe that they proved it to be genetic.. the initial picture posted on this thread looks exactly like the pictures I had seen from the Sutherlands... if I were you, I'd keep a few back and line-breed... you may of stumbled on the same thing that the Sutherlands had. I think they had done that as a "dinking around" project, and from what I gather on their web site, they must of dropped that project all together. However, if they prove to be highly colored animals (as all of the pictures I've seen of them), there's nothing wrong keeping a line of them and breed those into pastels, albinos, spiders, etc to brighten up the colors in morphs..

Best of luck with them,
Bristen.

and the pics. I think I will keep my little "spotnoses", I like them and want to breed them together someday to see what I get. I'll post some updated pics as they grow.
