Best substrate?

MikeT Jul 23, 2004 04:42 PM

Boy I'm sorry for the basic question. I've been using pine shaving for my snakes (balls, boa, barnecks). What do you think for bloods? Would cypress be better? Aspen - though this is more expensive than pine and is there a definate advantage? I'll pass on newspaper.
Thanks,
Mike

I use this stuff called Jungle Mix...made for forest reptiles

so it holds the humidity relatively well (important for blood pythons); just water it once in a while and mist a couple of times a week

and Daphne just loves to bury herself in it and lie still for hours or days or however long she feels like it

and I know the stuff works cos above all
Daphne is doing wonderful

good luck with substrates, man

I use the same stuff, except the place I get it from calls it 'cypress mulch' and charges $3 for a giant bag. I use it for all my forest-y reptiles.

thanks. However I've seen that 'Forest floor', and actually I thought it looked like a mix of stuff. Like some cypress mulch mixed with topsoil, probably some peat as well. I know cypress is very mold resistant, but not soil and peat. Also, if you're using this type of substrate, how do you clean - spot clean then change entire bedding periodically? One reason I like pine shavings is that you can easily see the waste and spot clean or change entirely as needed. Thanks.

Spot cleaning is very easy: I get a paper towel and pick up whatever Daphne happens to leave for me.

I've had her for about 11 months; I haven't completely cleaned everything out so far....she doesn't go often enough to make a full cleaning/changing of substrate necessary
