eggs hatching

phil nj Jul 23, 2004 09:10 PM

My first batch of 6 eastern box eggs started hatching on tuesday. They are incubated at 84 degrees in a hovabator incubator. Four of the six eggs are split and you can see a turtle with yolk, that is shrinking ever day(the yolk). The other 2 eggs look good but haven't split yet. The first egg started hatching at 58 days incubation. I have 7 more eggs from the same female that should hatch in 3 weeks. This is the first time I used the incubator. In past years I left eggs in the ground and incubated some in vermiculite on a shelf in a warm closet with temps fluctuating between 72-85 degrees. Previous hatch times were 65 or so days. I have had about a 75% hatch rate in the past, except last year which for some reason a 25% hatch survival rate. I thought I would try the incubator to see if I get a better hatch rate. So far so good.

All 7 of the 2nd batch hatched and look great. Only 2 of the original 6 survived hatching, not sure why. One was a partially formed embyo the others all hatched out but were small and died the over next 2 days. The 2 survivers and the other 7 look great. The second batch hatched out at the same number of days +/- a day. The first 2 already ate and will try feeding the others in a few days.
