Anyone ever been to Andros Island?

gatorjake Jul 23, 2004 09:27 PM

I'm trying to talk my wife into a trip to Andros Island so I can photograph the endangered Andros Island Iguana. I would love to make more photos available to cyclura.com. The more people who are aware of thier plight the better. Has anyone been to Andros recently? If so, did you see any iguanas and how difficult are they to locate? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Please do not post exact locations, I would hate to make it easier for poachers or hunters to find them.

I have some great pics! I hope your wife is adventersome. They are not easy to find. you wont find much around housing. Andros is a series of small "islands' and once you get to the right ones you will see them. I would look for a place called Tiamo its an eco-resort in Andros. I would work out from there getting to different locales. Try to get a hold of Chuck Knapp from the Shedd Aquarium. He would be the most help.
good luck and stay way from the poison wood!!!!

And yes, although my wife isn't quite as crazy about reptiles as I am, she usually humors me by tagging along. We once trekked through cactus and sagebrush all day in 90 degree heat in search of gopher tortoises only to find them at the end of the day colonized 20 feet from the road.

and had permits to collect the boas there. The iggies are definitely hard to see. Most are concentrated around the Middle ZBight and South Bight areas. When looking at a map, you'll understand how difficult it is to access these areas. Email me directly if you have any more questions. Andros is an excellent island to visit. It is the largest island in the Bahamian chain, but the least populated and developed.
