Aberrant patterned borneo hatchling

Rich_Crowley Jun 22, 2003 12:35 PM

The mother was treated with Amikacin while she was gravid. There were only 5 fertile eggs resulting from a clutch of 17 eggs. Only this hatchling survived and the remaining four died at various stages of development. One egg included a set of twins, which would have been my second twinning this season.

Why, did you have to treat her with what you did, and did that cause this to happen to the eggs?

The breeding pair were housed together over the winter and a sensor malfunction prevented me from getting accurate readings on the temperature drops at night. Consequently both were subjected to inappropriate temperatures. Both developed respiratory infections and were treated with Amikacin. The female had not observed an signs of being gravid. But, she obviously was. From my vet, he was not aware of problems with treating gravid females with Amikacin. As of yet, I do not know if this is just a freak occurance, odd genetics or the result of the medication. He hatched at 35g and if full of fire. Not 24hours out of the egg and he completely everted and hissed at me. Spunky one.

Certainly a very beautiful snake.. cannot wait to see it as it gets older, make sure you keep us updated

I think if it proves to be genetic (who knows right?) then it would certainly make up for the rest of the clutch!
