Beginner Frogs

spranks Jul 23, 2004 10:24 PM

What should I start out with? I think that Leucomelas are great looking frogs, but I also like Tinc and Auratus. I hear that Auratus are prett shy, though, right? I've also heard that Tincs are territorial, so then would I be able to put like 4 unsexed in a 20 gal tank? Can I mix Auratus and Leucomelas? What would you recommend for a beginner?
Also, if somebody could check the questions in my other post below I would appreciate it.

I would start with the tincs. They are great animals and never hide. I would just go ahead and get a sexed pair or two males, b/c the femles will fight. good luck

1) Are Tincs easy to sex?

2) Somebody told me that different color morphs of Tincs don't cross-breed for the most part, so they're less likely to show agression towards each other. Any truth to that?

3) Can I mix Tincs and Leucomelas?

4) How many frogs in a 20 gal long?

Yes tincs are easy to sex for the most part. I would never mix anything ever, but thats just me. For a 20 gallon i would say three frogs at most, good luck

adult male tinks have larger topads, there one of th easyest PDFs the sex, you could probubly get 2 tinks and one leucomelas in a 20 gal

The D. leucomelas get along very well in unsexed groups and are bold and active. My blue auratus morphs seem to be very shy, but the green are less so, from other reports. You might also consider the mint green P. terribilis. These are large, bold and very hardy frogs that also get along well in unsexed groups. I wouldn't mix any of the different species together, although it's sometimes done. The different tinc color morphs WILL cross breed. Although more expensive, D. galactonotus also get along in unsexed groups, even better than in isolated pairs.

Leucs are a great starter frog to keep in groups. Tincs are larger, but the females are agressive and will fight one another, sometimes to the death. Try googling 'dendroboard' and you might find more answers.

Arklier I didn't think anybody from dendrobaord still came to kingsnake. But whoever is on here should check out dendroboard, lots more information over there.
