Hey everyone,

I've got a forsten's tortoise that I'm trying to keep in top shape. My friend had her for about 10 years and gave her to me. The chelonia.org web page suggests cypress mulch to help maintain needed humidity.

I'm very concerned about cypress mulch and tortoise consumption. I offer this tortoise food 5-6 times a week, but today I saw her sniffing around in the mulch. She picked up a piece in her mouth and I rushed to remove it. I don't want to see her get impacted. Is there a better indoor substrate for these guys? Should I make a hide box with cypress mulch and have the rest newspaper?

Is all cypress mulch the same? The bags I've been getting contain everything from finely shreaded fibers to large chunks of wood. I want to make sure I'm getting the right thing.

Later,
Dave
