Butterworms/Trevoworms

scincoides Jul 24, 2004 12:11 AM

I was looking at different types of insects to feed some of my lizards and came across the Butterworm. I would like to try to breed them in captivity and didn't find a lot on there care. I was wondering if anyone here has successfully bred them and was wondering if anyone here knows what they eat in captivity, besides leaves from a Trevo bush, or does anyone know where you can get a trevo bush? I've never seen one at my local HomeDepot/Lowes. Maybe there's a special plant shop or something somewhere? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Nathan

I'm not sure if anybody breeds them. All of the suppliers I know of import them. But I could be wrong, so let me know if you come up with anything.

I was just looking up serveral types of feeders, and found this explanation:

"Butterworms are irradiated before being shipped from Chile. This is done to kill off any bacteria living in their digestive tract as well as to prevent the butterworm from ever pupating into a moth. As such, butterworms cannot be cultured at home"

Quoted from Bugorder.com on this page:

I believe the same thing is done when imported into the US.

Do you order from bugorder.com? They are very close to where I live so that would help me out with the shipping costs.

I tried to order (for the first time) some mealworms from them on friday, but I couldn't get beyond the "checkout" stage in the shopping cart.. The form wasn't working. They seem knowledgeable and I do plan to order from them whenever I hear back about it.

I believe they are treated with radiation to remove bacteria.

Let me know how it goes. Where abouts in Canada are you? If you are on the East side I would highly recommend Canadian Feeders. Rob is awesome, the only reason I don't buy from him anymore is because I'm a starving student on a budget and the shipping costs burn a hole in my student loans.
