Anaconda is being a little weird with eating

ben_renick Jul 24, 2004 12:47 AM

I've have a problem with this before, but it wasn't quite the same I guess... My anaconda has had a weird feeding the last few times I've tried. I'm not to worried about her, because I just moved her into a new cage and she is probably just getting used to it, but, she is like abnormally tame for a green, I would have expected a snap at least once, but none. She is eating (not this time) but like, she isn't snapping AT ALL, last time, she just took it in her water bowl probably because she just wanted it out of the way,I was holding it in her water bowl/in between her body where she was coiled a little, and she just continued to coil and the later ate it. She is about 5 1/2 ft long. Her cage size is 8'x 3' x 2' after about 2 more medium rats, she will probably be going on to large... But the point is that she is fairly active, especially when held, she is tame enough to the point of she will let you pet her head and she will almost look like she enjoys it... But I don't want her to the tameness of not eating properly... Her temps in her cage are 90 degrees hot side, cool side is 79/80 degrees... her humidity is absolutly fine too (I keep a rubbermaid container in her cage with bedding and spray it down daily, and her humidity is 100% perfect) I also have not been able to feed her outside of her waterbowl, which she hasn't been in for 3 days now. She is not held anymore than twice within 2-3 days either... What do you think is going on with her?

` I'd be happy to have a Green with such a mild feeding response.
` I think your cage temperatures should be lower, 73 to 86 F., or so. Also, if the ambient humidity for the whole cage is 100%, I'd lower it about 10%, and make sure the substrate is completely dry. I measure humidity 4 inches above floor level, half way between the coldest and warmest spots.
` I've found that petting the top of their head is not a good idea, as a regular practice. Many really seem to like having their throats stroked. I do it slowly, and gently, and some will go to sleep in that position. I've found this to be true with many Boids.
` If she isn't stressing, I'd handle her every day ( except just after feeding, for injury and temperature considerations ), if a pet is what you want. Watch her lung inflate/deflate rate to gauge stress.
` Tameess and feeding are not necessarily interdependent. I have had several Anacondas, including a Green, who are tame, have mild feeding responses, and eat like horses ( crap like horses, too ).
` This guy does what you described. He'll sit with his food for an hour, then eat it very gently.

I agree with pretty much everything dfr said. What is wrong with your snake? I read your post twice to see if I missed the problem and it sounds like you have a completely normal green anaconda. Sounds like nothing wrong and everything is going well enough to brag about, not worry about.
