2 questions: How do you stop mice from eating their babies &...rest inside!

stevodod Jul 24, 2004 10:45 AM

Hey,

I have a large rubbermaid in which I have 4 mice, 3 females and 1 male. A female just dropped her babies and already 3 are eaten. I move 1 female and the male to a seperate container, but what else can you do to keep the babies from being eaten?

Also, where do you get Mazuri (F6 I think it is) rodent food? I can't find it at my local pet stores in bulk!

Thanks and God bless,

Stevo

Your best bet would be a feed and tack shop. Anyone that carries Purina brands has access to Mazuri products.

Mice will cannabalize for the following reasons....
One, many, MANY, first time moms will eat their first litter...a combination of lack of training and stress I suspect as I don't have an issue with moms that were raised in the group with their moms.
Lack of water.
Low protein food. (I aim for high 20%s to low 30%s)
STRESS. I suspect this is it. Moving them is just stressing them more. Set them up the way they are gonna stay and leave them alone. Check on them to feed water and change the cage and otherwise LEAVE THEM ALONE. Don't count babies or peek in or anything until you know your individual mice aren't gonna freak.

leave the males in with the females all the time. Mice don't deal well with changes in their groups and sometimes will kill each other when you try to put a group back together or move a male around.

So I hear that you should only keep your breeding female about 8 months. What happens then, do you feed off the entire group (males and females) and start over?

thanks,
Miller

I constantly raise up new girls in the group and feed off older girls when they are past their prime. That way I don't do in a whole group at once and production stays up.
