Finally, i got my BRB!!!

miki00 Jul 24, 2004 11:01 AM

After waiting 2 weeks, i finally got my Brazilian Rainbow Boa, he is about 50cm, he is too small for little mice, but big for pinkies, so i'll be feeding him 2 pinkies in 4 days so he can settle in his enclosure.
Im housing it in a 10 gallon aquarium with a water dish and a hide out, im using repti-bark as a substrate, and im gonna put a branch in it so it can climb.
He is nippy and today he striked at me, i'll try to handle him later... Does anybody have/had a schedule about handling brb's to become tame? If so, can anybody tell them to me?

I REALLY DONT THINK THAT THERE IS A SET SCHEDULE FOR HANDLING YOUR SNAKE OR ANYONES SNAKE FOR THAT REASON. I WOULD LET HIM BE FOR A FEW DAYS ( 3 - 4 ) until he gets settled down and used to his enclosure. you might stress the snake out if you try and pick him up right away.

after that i would try and handle the snake as much as you can. i've notice with my snakes, the more you handle them, the more tame they are.

i just ordered myself my orange phase brb today from paul at pmherps. i cant wait for the snake to arrive : )

I'll let him settle for a few days and then i should handle him at night first so he won't be stressed.

thanks!

I'm waiting for appropriate temps to ship myself. I can't wait any longer, I've been waiting since the first breeding dates.

Good luck,
Linda

Pinkies are too small for BRBs, feed them small hoppers or weanlings, they can handle them, no problem.

A BRB will outgrow a 10 gallon in 6 months. 20 gallon long will give you at least a year!

Handle your BRB (at night) every other day for less than 10 mins. Mine are dog tame...

Good luck...

i'm from ny and i get my mice from petland. they have it as either small, medium, large.

i just order a snake that i should be getting next week. the snake was born this year and has shed twice already.

the breeder says he's feeding them on fuzzy mice. is this to small or should i feed it small mice?

It is my understanding that mice develop in the following stages:

Pinkies -> Fuzzies -> Weanlings -> Hoppers -> Adults

My guess would be that Hoppers may be considered as small mice while juvenile adults would be med and aged/pregnant ones would be large.

Brbs can handle more than you would expect them too and more so, these little guys transfer food into amaizing growth rates. I have a 3month old unrelated pair that handle an adult mouse a week.

Just experiment a little, a 2 week old BRB can eat a pinkie every two days. I'd take a look at the 'small' mice and get one of the smallest ones there are. Feed it and watch the belly lump. If it goes in the first day, too small. If you can still see it the fourth or fifth day after feeding, too big!

Good luck to ya!

P.S. - Check your classifieds or your state herp societies to see if there are mice elsewhere. You'd be surprised the number of people who breed 'em.

I know its gonna grow fast, so im gonna build a 55 gallon or similar with acrylic soon. The 10 gallon its a temporary home. I'll go to the pet store in 3 days and i'll check if they have little hoppers or other little mice.
Thanks!

Wait 4 to 5 days then begin to handle it, just try not to react if it bites. It will be non-striking before you know it. I'd go with fuzzies evry 4 to 5 days, or a hopper every 5 to 7 days.
Since you have it in a tank, keep a close eye on humidity. You may need to cover almost all the top to keep moisture in.

Thanks! i was worried it would arrive dead.
I can't wait to handle it!
Im spraying the enclosure twice every day for humidity.

I forgot to mention, yesterday that i handle it i was searching for irregularities, i noticed that some scales in the bottom were like cutted, but it didn't open or anything, i'll check them after it sheds and see if they disapear.

It most likely where the umbilical cord was attached. It will disappear in 2 sheds.

Sounds like you are paying attention, you'll do fine.

That's it!
I was getting scared!! The price was a little high, so im keeping it like if i were keeping gold!
Thanks!

Some helpful hints since those Brbs do love that humidity!

-Soak a claypot in water for a few days then use it as the hide (works for about a week)
-Large surface area waterbowls, as opposed to deep ones...
-Moss!!!! (Best thing I can tell you... holds moisture great and acts as a hide!)

All of these cut down on the amount of spraying needed.

Best of Luck...

Right now im on the basic, a coconut hideout (the only one available), a water dish, and a vine so it can climb it.
I was gonna get spaghum (sp?) moss today but i was short on money, so tuesday i´ll be getting some!
Also a large(long, not deep) water dish, and i'll try the pot trick!!
I'll be using a fogger so it can create a morning dew and if its too hot.

Thanks everybody!!

I wouldn't go with spaghum, but then again I have never used it.

I use Flukers 'Moss' - the generic bright green and that's the one I have had a relatively good success with...

Glad you are putting so much interest into your pet, just keep it up when the newness factor wares off...
