Tail problem

KomodoRyu Jul 24, 2004 11:21 AM

I took my iguana komodo out today and noticed his tail had 2 lumps. they're pretty new b/c this is the first i've noticed them. the first ones about half way down and i has a few dark colored lumps on it and its really dry. the other one is the last 2 stripes on the tip and upon feeling it i realized that the last 2 stripes were unfeeling and totally dried out and dead. what do i do?!?

I didnt understand very well what is happening to your ig's tail.Black spots can be caused by fungus. When a tail die it becomes very thin and black and can break by itself.By your description this didnt happen to your igs tail.

I cant load a photo yet, maybe later tonight. its black at the end and starting to break off and now its bleeding (where its breaking)

Is the tail regenerated?Regenerated tails are black and rubbery before becoming beige color. If its bleeding its not dead.Dead tails dont bleed.I need a photo to better understand whats going on.

Don't have a clue about the spots other then a fungus maybe,,as far as dead and no feelings,,,sounds like dry gangren. You need to find a vet.

It kinda sounds like what was going on with Grass's tail when we rescued her. She'd never had any help with her tail shed, and there were layers of dead skin built up. This caused a constriction of blood flow to the end and about a quarter inch or so turned black & fell off. But it was such a tiny amount -- I'm not sure if your problem is the same thing. Does your ig get enough humidity, and do you help get that shed skin off there?

I second the call for you to take it to a vet. You just can't know exactly what's wrong until you do, and as much as we want to help, we're not there to see it in person & can't give you the same medical advice a vet can.
