A question incubation

zonatatodd Jul 24, 2004 11:35 AM

Hello everyone. Today is day 49 of my yellowhead clutch of five. They look great, plump and full, greatly enlarged from when they were laid. My question is.....do they slightly indent before hatching like snake eggs? And also, after hatching; how soon do they eat, immediately or after 1st shed or...?
Thanks
An anxious Todd

Yes, you will notice, slight denting, when they begin to pip, you will notice, several things taking place, like denting, sweating, (dropplets of water on the egg,) so very eggciting, I actually stood there while my Vestigium was starting, and watched the whole egg, jiggle every so often.
Very Cool!

As far as eating, should eat in a few days after, but my last guy , waited me out for 14 days, and gave me a scare, but all is fine now, and he eats everyday So Be patient !

Good Luck, send out Hatching Annoucement to us all,

Thanks Eve for the info. I'll get eggcited WHEN they hatch. The mother of this clutch did not lay a second clutch, unfortunately. The other female did not participate at all; I wonder why that is? She was brumated with the others. Have you had other females that did not breed through an adult year? I will post macro hatchling pics; hopefully soon.

Brumated for a short time, and none of the females have shown their nuptial blush this season. One yellow male did sleep, for a long time, and was interested, but no females were.

On the other hand, I have also had females who did not brumate at all, who have layed successfully and eggs are incubating.

Go figure! Always a new learning experience for me each season, with each collared.

Can't wait for your baby pics!
