New to BP's

sham1973 Jul 24, 2004 05:22 PM

Hello everyone! I am new to snake ownership and I just wanted to get some opinions and make sure I am doing this right. I purchased a young female ball python at a reptile expo 6 days ago. She is set up in my old 55 gallon fishtank. I have lots of branches in there for her to climb on (which she does quite often.) On the cool side of the cage I have a tupperware container with a hole on top and about 2 inches of water inside, also there is a rock near the hole to help her in and out. There is a also a cardboard box for her to hide in. On the warm side (heated by a stick on undercage heater) there are several rough rocks for her to hide under. The bottom of the cage is Astroturf. Today was her first feeding. I put her in a large cardboard box with a small mouse which she eagerly devoured. Also i keep they cage covered most of the time to preserve humidity and mist it 2x a day. Am i doing everything right so far? Also, do BP's like company? I'd like to get another snake if she would enjoy the company. Thanks so much!

One of the things I noticed is that a 55 gallon tank is VERY large for a small Ball Python. How old and how large is this snake (weight)? Usually you would only need an enclosure that large for an adult. A younger ball may get stressed out living in such a large enclosure. As far as putting two ball pythons together, it is not a good idea. They most likely wouldn't hurt each other, but they usually like to be kept in their own enclosures. You probably do not want to hear this (since you have already set everything up, etc), but this is my opnion. Good luck, and enjoy your new ball!

a suggestion and somewhat a question, what if they had separate cages but interacted? would this provide a sense of companionship or would it result in competition...

How do you tell if a snake is stressed? She seems to be quite active and doesn't appear stressed to me, but i wouldn't really know what to look for. She does have nice hiding spots that are small places to curl up in.

How would a bigger cage make it stressed?
