New Aboreal Cage Finished...

ttreptile1 Jul 24, 2004 08:03 PM

I made this cage out of some scrap melamine and glass that I had left over from a hatchling rack project. I will be getting a donation Amazon Tree boa in August and needed a cage with a bit more height and more water tight. Well I think it came out awesome. I am currently really limited on space in the snake room and had to custom this one to fit above the toilet! Wife loves it there , lol.

Its 4' tall x 3' Wide by 20" deep. 3/4 Melamine and 1/4" polished edge glass. Corners caulked with 100% silicone white sealant. (note - Bulb cage not installed yet, but will be tomorrow).

Now to decide if I want natural wood branches or PVC for cleanliness. Not sure yet. Branches always eventually mold on me when I keep high humidity boas or pythons. I may use the PVC scorching technique.

Nice job. Did you use the same shower-board to line the interior?

My take on the whole mold issue is to increase ventilation. I know it sounds counter-intuitive but it's worked great for the Germans for years. As you probably know they are generally a decade ahead of us in terms of breeding success.

Humidity is then controlled via more frequent mistings and adding more surface area to the cage (live, plastic plants). Those ultrasonic humidifiers by Sunbeam, Walgreens, etc. can be used to "fog" several cages at once.

But then again scorched PVC has its merits as well.

The whole cage is melamine. I didn't use the white board on this one. Just sealed the corners real nice.

Here is a pic with some branches and the bulb cage installed. I am still not happy with the branches. I will most likely chane it a hundred times before I like it. As they are now they interfere with the water bowl and substrate maintanence, so they have to change.
