How long should she hold her eggs?

toitles Jul 24, 2004 09:38 PM

I have a healthy Eastern box who I know is gravid. I can feel the eggs and the vet confirmed via x-ray that's she's carrying 5 a couple of months ago.

However, she's done no test nesting and I hear that everyone else's boxies are dropping eggs right and left. When should I get concerned and consider having her get an oxytocin shot?

Where is she being housed? what substrate, how much room, by herself, indoors, outdoors, etc.?
She will be reluctant to lay eggs if she doesn't have a suitable place to dig a nest.

She's in a 50-gallon Rubbermaid with 6 or 7 inches of topsoil mixed with bed a beast. There is a dish that she soaks in several times a day and a pot cut in half for her to hide under.

Her health is good (vet checked her out) and she's kept outside. But it's getting near the end of the normal period where these things lay and I'm wondering if it's okay for her to go a few more weeks.

She needs a good 6-8 inches of dirt that has been packed down hard: the nest cavity needs to hold together as she digs, or she'll give up. If it keeps caving in, she'll abandon the process and you might not see evidence if her having tried.
The ideal place for her to be is outside, where she can dig in the ground, in an enclosure that has a bare, sunny patch free of plant material, tree roots, etc.
