airlines and snakes carried onboard?

jyohe Jul 25, 2004 01:06 PM

anyone know the airports' thoughts on carry on luggage containing live little snakes?.......

is it ok?..legal?.....or not allowed?.......

just a thought with the Daytona show coming up.......(and more)..alot of people ask me and I wonder what the airlines say...

well..they may say one thing a do another...

if you call and they say it's ok.....yet end up being held in a room at the teminal by people checkers with different ideas??????

I called a few years back and NWA and AA said "NO WAY!".

you should call ahead and they should allow you to bring them as pets...like any other airlines...just under the plane

In the belly is an added cost if you ship it in the animal section. But it's better than nothing I guess.

I checked on it about 1 year ago or so and I think it was southwest. you could bring a snake as a carry on pet but it would cost $75 extra and you would have to have paper work from a vet within 10 days before flying saying the snake was ok. Cost too much for me, but it is an option on some airlines.

few years back you could /people did walk onboard with snakes and all...carry on...

since this 9-11 crap...who knows what they'll do..

as I said.....call...they'll say no....and yet you get away with it..

OR call ahead...they say yes....and you still get stopped at terminal....>?

.....just wondered....alot of people fly around to shows and all.........

if i were bringing back a baby ball or something small, id put in a snake bag and put in a side pocket on a pair of baggy pants or shorts.
No one would even know.
its not like the metal detector is gonna detect them.

No harm

It all depends on the Airline. SouthWest will allow them in a pet carrier or such, Delta will sometimes if approved ahead of time. I have done it before with the snakes being packed in a box sort of like when I ship them and keeping it in my carry on luggage with approval. Some carriers say no way but under no circumstanced should anyone try to bring them onto the plane without approval first. With the Regulations that are in place now for weapons on Airplanes they could very well try and say that you are planning on using the snake to hijack the plane or something along those lines. It is a big security risk to try and bring anything on an Airplane with the approval of the Airlines first.

Not to worry, JY...I've never known an airline to say "it's ok" to carry a Herp on board. Warm fuzzies sometimes get to travel in a crate, under the seat...but not cold blooded critters...no, no, nooooooo... Well...actually...I have carried Herps in a crate before, come to think of it...and with the ok from a Delta VP...was a pair of baby Komodo Dragons traveling from one zoo to another. I was told NOT to take the critters out or even say what they were...so I just said "nice, puppy" and all was dandy. Back in the old days/pre 9/11 it was sometimes possible to carry on board discretely...but I wouldn't try that any more. Pay to ship properly and everyone will be the happier = my 2 cents...TW

Yeah, I was wondering where some of these people were getting the idea that it was okay. If somebody gets caught shipping illegally, it will only make it harder to ship than it already is.
