Soon to be first-time Veiled owner. Questions...

Eidechsemann Jul 25, 2004 01:50 PM

Hi. I have 15 other pet reptiles including lizards (Agamids, Iguanids, Geckos, Monitors), snakes and turtles. But I've never had a chameleon. Well, on Thursday, I am going to be getting a baby Veiled Chameleon. I just have a few questions: first about color. I've been looking at pictures of adult Veileds and many are beautiful with a plethora of different colors like green, yellow, orange and blue. I know males get to be like this, but is that true for all males? And what colors are adult females usually?
I also have a question about feeding. Many places I've seen have said to feed juveniles as many as 20 pinhead crickets a day and to feed adults 10 large crickets a day. Is this accurate? There is no worry of obesity doing this? Thanks for any help!

I have been told to let babies eat as much as they can in 5 minutes. I feed mine twice a day and he gets a dozen or so at each feeding. He is almost six months old now, so we are moving to 1/2 inch crickets. Plus I have a beardie, who I have been waiting to get larger for bigger crickets. Every male I have ever seen has those vivid colorations. Mine gets more beautiful with every shed. Chameleons get stressed a lot easier than other reptiles, so be gentile and give it space. I would recommend a male as females can get egg bound and it is such a hassle. At least thats what my breeder says. Good luck.

You can't really overfeed a baby. Let it eat as much as it wants to. Mineral dust every day for the first 5 months, every other day until its about 9 months old, then once a week after that. Vitamin dust every other day at first, then once a week after 9 months. A good quality gutload is more important than dusts, and you'll be less likely to overdose. Check the recipe for gutload on http://www.adcham.com. There are some good "baby rearing" info articles on

Female veileds are basically green without the stripes and dark patches of the males. But, they look similar for some months when young. A male will have little knobs on its hind feet at the "heel" of the toes.
