Giant vs. Slimy Salamander

HerperHelmz Jul 25, 2004 02:11 PM

This was a cool scene, it only lasted about 5 minutes though. Giant grabbed the 4 inch salamander and started chewing on it's neck(like in the pic below). The salamander died shortly after that and then Giant began eating it. Sorry for the bad quality of these pics as well, I am just now getting the hang of my camera(forgot to zoom in though).

This is when she was almost done with it. 2 days after she ate this one, she ate another small salamander, about an inch long, I haven't had any success with getting her to eat any F/T items, and salamanders are a little hard to get a hold of. I may end up letting the snake go.

That Ringneck has quite the appetite!

Yeah but both of those salamanders wouldn't even be an appetizer. I'm having alot of trouble obtaining food for it. I hope to be getting some anoles soon. The snake is looking very thin.

With the size of giant, seems it should have no problem to feed on live worms from the bait shop. From my experience, salamanders and worms are always welcome by the ringneck snake.

HerperHelmz Jul 26, 2004 01:00 PM

Tried it.
I don't know what it is, but she just isn't interested in F/T worms, nightcrawlers, or live ones. I think the thing is, is that she will only go after live moving prey. The other day I offered her a green frog, she flicked her tounge in and out about a hundred times a minute, but she didn't see anything moving so she stopped.

I have to agree salamander is the only prey that really turn on the ringneck snake. There was one time that I threw in a dead salamader, the ringneck attacked the dead salamader immediately even the salamander was lying still there without motion. I think it must be the scent thing from the salamander that excite the ringneck snake.

HerperHelmz Jul 26, 2004 03:48 PM

I agree with that last statement, expect scenting stuff with salamander slime didn't work either, I scented pinky mice with slimy salamander slime and Giant just looked at the pinky. But she did flick her toungue around alot, she probably thought food was somewhere around, but like I said, if it doesn't move, she won't go after it.

If anyone wants to get me some sallies, lol feel free to. I'm gonna go out hunting for some right now, it's cold and rainy, but hopefully I'll find one.

I also had Giant intersted in Brown snake blood, yes, the smell of blood, I have no clue why. I had to feed my Sk, so I cut off some of a brown snake's tail and put the snake back in it's tank with Giant, she started following the drops of blood, but couldn't find the snake. lol don't think I'm cruel or anything because I cut off a snake's tail, my scarlet king is more important to me than a brown snake. The brown snake is still alive, and my scarlet king ate the tail.

P.S.- On my ringneck snake caresheet, I noted that northern ringneck snakes do love salamanders, it is different with every sub-species for their favorite food.

It is the same exact way with my garter snake. He will only eat toads that are set in front of him and then start to jump away. And only eats worms that squirm or crawl away rapidly! Perplexing!!!LOL
