I am trying to decide which type of python i want to buy and i have narrowed it down to a spotted and a ball python. I'd like some opinions from experienced python keepers.

Depends upon what you want--both are great species to keep. Balls come in a variety of color and pattern morphs--be sure to buy captive bred, or you may face eating issues. Mine tends to be a chubby little "lap snake" when handled--she's content to suck up to a warm spot and stay there.
The antaresia complex--pygmy, childrens, spotted and stimsons--are also fascinating snakes. Aside from natural variations of color; ie. Cape York Spotted Pythons, there aren't many morph choices. I just love the "rainbow serpent" irridescence of their scales. They can be a bit nippy as babies, but usually grow into calm, deliberate adults. When handled, they are more active than ball pythons--not content just to curl up and hang out. They are not as stout as ball pythons.
Care requirements are about equal--fairly straightforward. Balls tend to require more humidity than spotteds, and my girl likes it a bit warmer than the antaresia. Hope this helps you to decide--just my experience.
