This announcement has been on multiple reptile boards, and it has been pointed out that in shows where the promoter has chosen to spend the $ on overnight security, there has been little theft. Apparently, there was NO overnight security here.

I am in Florida, with loads of shows and as far as I know, there was only one that had someone in overnight in Tampa, and still many reptiles from a few tables disappeared one Friday night either during set up or sometime before the show opened Saturday morning

The discussion took place on another board and it stated that when, at one large show, overnight security was used, not one little thing was missing. Due to the huge amount of money involved here, and large numbers of herps that cannot easily be taken out of a show into a hotel room overnight, I would have to say that overnight security is a must. If I were some of the more well known vendors with extremely valuable animals, I would no longer exhibit at shows that could not provide this service.
I certainly would not depend on insurance (an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure) and I would NOT allow future business to be affected by having some puny low value exhibit; I would INSIST on the proper precautions.
I have exhibited at bird shows in the past, and only during a day; I bring this up because the table rental was expensive- there is no excuse not to spend enough to make exhibitors and their stock secure.

Actually we did 17 shows last year out here in the Western US and every show had overnight security. At one show the promoter spent the night in the building. The only high dollar theft that I know of was during the open hours (broke into a cage while the vendor was distracted at the other side of the booth). We put our animals under the table or covered up their caging and no issue with thefts (knock on wood).
