Wierd reaction from corn during 1st feed of a rat

Jonah Jul 25, 2004 09:47 PM

I fed my adult corns wean rats for the first time today as the adult mice no longer seemed to make a bulge in their bellies. The amel femal ate hers pretty quickly but the male okeetee who usually eats pretty quickly was sniffing around like crazy and making prolonged sniffs with his tongue hanging out and his mouth wide open. He almost looked like he was gagging. Very weird looking. He eventually ate it but what the heck was he doing?

I wouldn't worry about it too much...he was probably just absorbing a new scent for the first time. Who knows? I fed a few of my corns rat pups for the first time too and was surprised when they ate them. I thought it wouldn't go over too well but it was ok. The corns actually went nuts trying to constrict their new prey item. I figure I'll do this every once in awhile to vary the diet a little...mix it up. Some speculate that mouse hair has additional proteins for contributing to more effective digestive enzymes. One more thing to consider...while you and I may not perceive a huge difference, we can bet that a snake detects a HUGE difference between the scent of a mouse and a rat. Maybe keep an eye on your corn with the funny behavior...document it and watch for it again.
