How are toad resistant to their own toxins?

moonhardt Feb 07, 2003 01:25 PM

This was posted just before the forums changed. I only read one reply, so please re-post any replies to this question. Toads produce toxins in their parotid glands and skin glands that are also found in their blood. Does anyone know why these toxins do not affect the toads? Particularly the bufodienolides?

They aren't. If you do not change their water enough or their substrate, I believe they can be toxic to themselves and other toads. Andy
