Operation Snakerescue!

Jul 26, 2004 01:02 AM

Hi
This is not about garters, but about our local Natrix natrix natrix in one of their most northern corners of their distrubition. We found 2 waste dumps for plant material filled with female snakes. They couldn`t get out again and would have suffered a slow death, if we hasn`t found them. In one of the dumps, we maneged to save 65 snakes and found 1500 eggs, but there were plenty more. In the other we saved 10 snakes, but the dump was so filled, that it was impossible to dig it out. We build two passage ways out, so that the rest could leave on their own.

We will visit the place frequently when the time comes for the juveniles to emerge and make sure that they can escape.

That's a lot of lucky snakes. Do you know how they got there?
