very very picky lizard, helga question

jeune18 Jul 26, 2004 12:59 PM

so helga is healthy now digging in her sand and basking on her rocks, however she is still the pickiest eater on the planet. she loves her peas and since i cannot find fresh ones here i have been giving her the dry split peas and she eats them. however the only other things that she will eat are mustard greens, squash and zucchini. that's it. i have tried collard greens, kale and escarole (spelling?) and she will have nothing to do with them. she won't ever eat any fruits that i offer her as treats.
i guess my question is, is it ok now that she is healthy to do some "tough love" with her and give her only things she does not like and kind of force her to eat them from hunger or do those four things she likes have enough nutrients for her?

What she is eating regularly sounds good, but you should keep offering other foods too. You may find in a month or two that she won't eat one of those items. My gals go for months ignoring certain foods then they can't get enough of them. Red leafed lettuce and romaine are good to include just a little of. She might also enjoy fresh green beans if she likes peas. Also you might try introducing just a small portion of something. Sort of hide it in with teh rest of the stuff. Then if they start eating it you could increase the amount you put in the food dish. As long as she is eating 3-4 things you probably have covered her nutritional needs. Shredded sweet potato is another good item that my girls run hot and cold with. If she stops eating something you need to have a few back up items to replace it with.
