I just measured the expanded metal on a Freedom Breeder mouse rack. I measued the opening with a tape measure and sort of had an awkward angle to get to the metal but I think it was fairly accurate.
The length-wise opening of the diamond opening was ~5/8". The width-wise opening was ~3/8". I think this is about as large as you would want to go without risking hoppers escaping through the openings.
Keep in mind when you go to buy it the product will be sold by the length-wise measurement and the guage (i.e. thickness) of the metal. I also suspect when they list the length-wise measurement of the diamond it's from the center of the metal and not the actual opening.
Either way, mice can handle slightly smaller. Keep in mind the ideal mesh for mice is considered to be 3/8"x3/8" or 1/3"x1/3". Moreover, many breeders have had success with 1/4"x1/4".
So I would go to your local supplier and measure the opening yourself. Make sure the width of the diamind opening is at least 1/4" and the length is at least 3/8".
Are you going with stainless or something else? Do you have any prices yet? Let me know what they are if so. I'm going through the same thing myself right now.
