American Toad or Gray Tree Frog?

five-o Jul 26, 2004 07:26 PM

Where I live in Michigan, I frequently find dozens of american toads, gray tree frogs, and green frogs not far from the house while doing herp surveys in my area(my windows are open and I can hear the grays calling now!). I love frogs and toads, and I wanted some advice from anyone who has kept a gray and a toad as to which one would make a better pet. I like both a lot. I'm not only looking at the frog's/toad's personality, but low maintenance which means an easier time for the animal and us. There are many froglets/toadlets running around the yard now, and I'm sure many are being gobbled up by the big mowers around here. I thought I'd grab one soon. Thanks for any input.

I have kept both. They are both great to keep. It is really just up to you on which you want. If i had to pick i'd say the greys b/c tree frogs have always interested me more. a good care sheet for both the grey and toad is on amphibiancare.com Where in michigan are you? good luck

I'm near Niles, which is close to Indiana. Also, do you think a 20 gal extra high tank would be okay for a gray?

Yes, a 20g high would be good for a grey. make sure there are plenty of perches and some plants, and a shallow large water dish with dechlorinated water. Mine always did well just at average room temperature,72 degrees, even in winter i never used a heat source b/c they can withstand a wide range of temps as it is. Niles is pretty close to me here in south bend. good luck

I've kept both too, and I would say grays are my favorite. They are both easy to keep though, the grays just eat less and are a bit more active. I think they are prettier too, you just have to do a little searching for the nicer ones. They will vary alot.

Good luck

Guess I'll go with the gray.
