Northern pine question

svtsinister Jul 26, 2004 07:47 PM

Theres this place where i live selling 1.1 northern pine snkes for $300 for the pair. Is that a good price? Also, i only have kingsnakes. How are pines compared to kings. Which ones do you like better? Should i get a pine? I held one today and they seem awsome. what ya guys think?

What do you know, Im a king keeper and I just bought a pair of northern pines! How big are they? I purchased my pair for 175 shipped, and they are a year old and about 30 inches. 300 would be good if they were ready to breed adults, but not for young ones, maybe if they are albino (even then Id say its a little much).

Care is different than a king Im learning. They like it cooler than kings, 80 by day 70 by night. Mine have also had trouble shedding, which I hear is common with this species. I have had recommendations to place a damp cloth in the hide box while in blue or place the snake in a wet pillow case to aid in shedding. Also, since they are in cooler temps, you cant give them the enormous prey that you can a king. They take smaller prey more often better than they do large prey. I dont have it all figured out yet, as I said I just got mine, so good luck!

Good question. You will need a large enclosure as they get up to 7 feet. One thing I read stated half a square foot for ever foot of snake, so that would be like 28" by 22", which I house my yealings in. I think that may be too small for them though. Maybe a 4' by 2' enclosure would be good. It also stated to take them out daily so that they can stretch out fully. They should be very gentle as adults (mine dont take too kindly to being held). Now note that I am novice and have only been keeping northern pines for a few weeks now, so be sure to get some advice from others here, Id like to hear some of it too.
