I fed a Texas patchnose (S. grahamiae lineata) a lizard for the first time yesterday (he had been eating unscented f/t pinkies prior btw-which surprised me). But what really surprised me was when he latched on the lizard just above it's tail, no contriction was involved and he CHEWED on it for several minutes-reminded me of the way a coral snake "chews". Then he LET GO and slithered around a bit (again like a coral), then went back to the lizard WHICH WAS MOTIONLESS, NOT BREATHING AND APPEARED DEAD! He then ate it head first and the lizard did not move AT ALL. I came upon a site that said that most colubrids have some form of venom-like proteins produced by their Duvernoy's Gland.
I have heard of people swelling up after being bitten by some garters, coachwhips, etc. but had been told this was just an allergy to the bacteria and/or saliva in their mouths. That lineata sure looked like he paralyzed that lizard with something to me. ANY COMMENTS? Thanks...
