Opinions on Plastic Cages

burmaboy Jul 26, 2004 09:42 PM

Ok...so melamine does'nt make it for high humidity situations.
And checking out different laminates today, it's just as easy to buy cages. The cost, and the time involved with the extra steps.
There is one cage maker, the 8ft cages are actually two 4ft cages bolted together.
While I have'nt seen them, I can assume there is a lip between the two sections.
They are made this way to avoid extra tooling up for another cages size, and to keep the shipping costs down.
The price is around $400. Not bad for a plastic cage.
How does anyone feel about this cage lip in the middle?
Think it might be a hinderance to the snake? Will it damge scales?
I would prefer an 8ft solid cage, but shipping costs are brutal!
No manufacturers come to the local shows here to deliver to me here. And I dont want to pay to own UPS.
Where can I get a cage shipped reasonably? How can I?
I need 6 between now and Christmas. It would be sooner except for the cost.

You can look into Junglehabitats in that size (but like you mentioned shipping may be brutal).. Also where are you located? I know of 3 local people who make enclosures (including myself) who are looking into frequenting local shows to sell enclosures at..

I don't like the idea of two, four foot cages being bolted together for a Burmese. Unless the lip is so shallow that you can fill up to that point with substrate??

I thought Jungle Habitat's cages were shipped unassembled? That should save a lot on shipping. If you could come up with the cash for all five or six that you needed it might be worth a drive to pick them up.

Unless you own a home and don't forsee moving anytime soon I highly recommend the ability to break down the cages.

Or see if Jungle Habitats or someone else can customize a plastic cage so that they still bolt together but the lip is low enough to easily level it off with mulch or another substrate.

I agree with chris a lip to a burmese or any large snake would be IMHO the same as one of use laying on a 1x4 turned up on its side ...would become uncomfortable real fast and i would also think that a large boid when gravid could it cause issues there ? not sure just a thought

They are shipped, flat to Conn shouldnt be to horribly bad from NC- Cali its $112.00 shipped w/out glass. (I prefer to ship the large cages to minimize breakage on a 4x18"/24" 1/4" glass) it also saves on the shipping as the glass alone weighs about 3lbs per sf.

This could probably be done easily but the minimal lip would be about 1" high and 1' wide which could be eased over on the edges w/ a round over bit leaving a 1" radius lip on the floor of the cage 1"x1" lip around the cage , this would leave two sets of doors on a cage so 8ft cage would have double sliding doors giving you two 2ft sliding door sections or with a lil thinking make the doors fully functional as 2 4x? doors..Burmaboy ... email me i would like to talk to you about something

Just curious as to how your cages go together and how they are held together?

If they are held together with screws, how well would the HDPE hold up to being assembled, broken down, and re-assembled several times?

Hey Chris ,

The cages are milled with rabbit joints and dados where need depedning on the cage type. Then supplied 100% silicone is provided to seal the joints which are held with a ceramic coated drywall screw. i pre drill all the holes and then use a clutched screwdriver to assemble them here . i always recommend that they are re assembled / dissassembled with a hand screw driver even if you have a clutched drill due to the fact that even the same clutch on a different drill could be more or less depending on the state of the drill itself. This limits over tightening of the screws in the plastic also the screws are a course thread so it bites deeper in the HDPP plastic i dont use the HDPE it seems to be a heavier plastic then the HDPP and inturn has more of a weight issue on spans .

So as to answer your initial question they do well when taken apart or assembled a few times , now granted if its done 1 dozen times that may have a effect on it but as with any screwed cage it would likewise plastic or wood . Mainly the ability to break them down is meant to ease the shipping blues and not as a method of normal undertaking.
