firebelly toads making wierd noises...help

caimania Jul 26, 2004 10:13 PM

I just bought 3 firebelly toads, I don't know what sex they are or how to tell. I know enough to keep them alive and happy according to everything i've read, but I joined this forum to learn more about them. One of the three fire bellies has been making wierd almost squeaky types of noises. Is this normal or is it a mating call or something, because it only does it when it is near the other firebelly.

Male fbt's make a mating call that sounds like a dog barking from far away. I've heard that the males make the sound, and the females don't make any noise. My fbt calls out at least 1-2 times a day, and sometimes he will repeatedly croak (bark) for a period of time. You can tell the sexes in two ways. One, is if the frogs "hug", the male is in the back, grabbing the female. The other way is to look at the front forelimbs of the frogs. The males have stronger forelimbs and they sort of look more muscular than the female forelimbs.

Lol that's just the noise they make. Get used to it, they make it A LOT. I don't know very well how to sex them, but I know that females have smoother backs than males, and just look to see who is mounting who. Then you should be able to figure it out, hehe...

Firebelly toads make alot of noises. most of the time it sounds like a bark. I'm not sure is it is mating call, sometime when my frogs are alone or there are no othwer sound they just start up. I would not worry about it. And i think males have biger forearms and females backs are a little wider and flater than males. I not sure though.
