my first baby!

katieh Jul 27, 2004 02:00 AM

this is the first season I've had a male and female, and all my eggs have either collapsed or moulded over until I was left with one lonely little egg. I looked in the incubator tonight and there was this adorable baby. I'm so relieved. I thought that one of my geckos was sterile

Awww, look at that sweet little face, lol.. Congradulations!! I'm so happy for you! Are you keeping that little one? If so, what will you name him/her? Good luck!!

I'm going to keep ?her?. I haven't named ?her? yet, my boyfriend made a good point that I should make sure its going to be healthy and live before I go and name it. I hope to god it's a female, but it's been so hot lately that even though I had the incubator set around 80, its been 84-85 in there

are its eyes deformed? i dont see any eyelids

katieh Jul 27, 2004 03:23 AM

i really hope not

how can i check without disturbing it too much?

Rhachodactylus Jul 27, 2004 03:34 AM

just go over to what your keeping it in, and slowly check if it has eyelids, im pretty sure you know what they look like, in the pic it looks to just have its eye there and no eyelids

HotRodHerps Jul 27, 2004 07:04 AM

I hope that it is not as it appears. I used to have a female from whom I only ever hatched babies without eyelids. Regardless of what male I mated her with or incubation temps the result was always the same. I stopped breeding her and I'm sorry to say the hatchlings did not do very well. I really hope that you have better luck than I did. No matter what, don't get discouraged.

My first hatchling also hatched with no eyelids. It looked exactly like yours. I was told that it would eventually go blind and that I should euthanize it. So, if it has no eyelids, which it appears it doesn't, if will probably have to be put down. I know, it sucks, but you always have the next clutch to look forward too...

my boyfriend looked at it under a magnifying glass and he says that it has one eyelid.

are deformities like this a result of multiple generations of inbreeding?

Josh06 Jul 27, 2004 11:46 AM

It could be caused by inbreeding, but it is also the result of temperature spikes. If it can blink and close it's eyes, it will probably be fine. But if it can't close it eyes, they will eventually dry out and the gecko will go blind. It won't be able to hunt and it's eyes are susceptible to infection. For these reasons, I put my baby down when he was born without eyelids. He did have tiny eyelids, but he couldn't blink or close them. The decision is up to you, but just keep the leo in mind, and the pain it might suffer....

it doesnt have eyelids thats funny. How does it blink? Its eyes are going to dry up sorry.

katieh Jul 27, 2004 12:46 PM

i think its the saddest thing ever

milwaukeereptile Jul 28, 2004 02:07 AM

Let me guess... you were one of those kids (probably still are), that tries to put firecrackers in anything that moves and tourtured animals for fun...

Not cool and it will earn zero respect around here. And saying sorry after post isn't going to make up for it. Makes me wonder what conditions your leos live in....

know what sucks? it doesnt have eyelids . How does it blink?

rhachodactylus Jul 27, 2004 12:50 PM

Ignorant newbies like you who post moronic replies to messages about somthing they have no clue about, a leopard gecko born with no eyelids is not at all funny, think of how you would feel with your eyes open 24/7 and not being able to blink

you need to grow up and stop posting to threads unless you have some helpful advice or sharing a story

katieh Jul 27, 2004 01:10 PM

im going to take it to the vet this afternoon and see what their opinion is.

leofreak Jul 27, 2004 02:34 PM

I think it might be fine because I rarely ever see my leos use their eyelids. Most of the time they lick their eye lids. But also it might not get much sleep.Sorry if it has to go down.I wish you luck at the vet visit.

sorry i was goofing around with my friends. anyways maybe a humid hide box could help? That along with licking their eyes they might be ok. Thats sad

katieh Jul 27, 2004 07:25 PM

the vet says that one of its eyelids is swollen, and on the other side the eye is sunken back into its head a bit and is mostly closed.

but he saw it blink on both sides and at least one side reacted to his light

worst case scenario: 1 eye works

Josh06 Jul 27, 2004 07:40 PM

Keep everyone updated on it. I kind of regretted euthanizing mine, but i was informed it was the best choice for my leo. Good Luck with yours, and I hope he does great for you!!
