New tegu enclosure

LizardMom Jul 27, 2004 03:01 AM

We just got this finished this evening. Loiosh and Rocza were a riot, exploring and digging and tongue flicking all over. The inside dimentions are 6'x3'x3', and there is a ramp to the 2nd story, where the main basking light is located. The substrata will be deeper once the higher glass litter dam arrives, but they don't seem to mind. The stupid blue plastic cat litterbox hide is Loiosh's 'security blanket,' from back when he was too lazy to dig. He lies in there during the day with his head out so he won't miss anything (like food!) Although, he really seems to enjoy digging under the ramp and tunneling behind the water tub, so maybe I will be able to remove it.

Here's a closer pic of the right side with the 2nd story. Loiosh is on the basking platform and Rocza is on her rock.

Actually, I found it stuffed in the back room of my local herp shop. It's fiberglass - we have no idea what it started life as, and someone had attached the big beam across the middle. From there, it wasn't hard to add a basking platform and ramp. The front was UGLY! Believe it or not, a few hours with some woodgrain contact paper and....instant furniture. The base started life as a steel workbench. I'm kind of proud of the way it turned out; I should have taken pictures before we started. The tegus love it, and that's all that matters.

old Neodesha Plastics tank. I'm a recycler too. Except I'm more of a dumpster diver.

Yeah, I wondered about that. The outside was just unfinished fiberglass. Someone suggested it may have started life as a shower stall, but at only 6' on the interior, it would have had to be for really short people! I thought maybe a deep well for a fishing boat or something. Anyway, it makes a great cage. As to recycling, I've done my share of dumpster diving, but the best finding was in the upper class neighborhoods of Philly on 'big trash day.' lol
