Anyone ever bitten by a Green Tree python?

Trapping_Hands Jul 27, 2004 03:31 AM

I was thinking of purchasing an Green Tree Python. I have read that they are very tempermental. I know that all snakes will bite if provoked, but I don't want one that is over aggressive. Please reply if you can answer.

Thank you!

some kinds are known to be snappy but every snake has its own attitude

i have a 2 year old aru gtp and he has never bit me once

i suggest looking at some babies and picking a pretty one with a nice attitude

you wont regret it.

attatched is a pic of my new baby jayapura
which has not bitten me either

When you're lookin at babies you do want it to strike though. This indicates a good feeding response.

They are all individuals. Some can be pretty tame(usually Arus) while others may not even allow a hand to enter a cage(usually biaks). I have only been bitten once and it was a neonate who was stressed cause I had just gotten him from the show. He has never bitten since. They shouldnt really be handeled more than once aweek anyway. It depends on what you want. I believe that they are pretty intelligent for snakes, so they arent all nice, or all mean. Personally, completely trust my chondro about 10X more than my bullsnake. Check out the ChondroWeb forums!!!

Thanks for the reply. I don't plan on handling the snake very much, if even at all. I know that this species and the ETB are not the type who like to be handled. I just don't want to be bitten everytime I attempt to clean the cage. I know that they can inflict a pretty painful bite if provoked. But for a snake with those colors and coils, I just might risk it LOL.

I was just wondering...what are the differences between Arus and Bilak and Chondros...and how can I tell the difference?

Thanks in advance

Biaks are generally nippy and Arus are usually less aggressive. As juveniles you can't really tell unless you buy from a reputable breeder. Go pick up THE COMPLETE CHONDRO!!!!

I've got a few bites but it's always from the same snakes and I get lazy and let down my guard. Of the many animals I've been bitten by over the years, I'll take the gtp bite over just about any other animal bite. And personally, since I'm allergic to mosquito bites, I'd rather have a snake bite me more than most bugs, heals faster!!

It's important to not present yourself to the snake as a potential threat or prey item. When you learn to move around them most will accept you... let them think that you are a higher warm branch and you'll get along just fine. I've got a few that are puppy dog tame and I'd trust them in an educational environment (kids!) and only a couple that will still take a shot at me when they think I'm getting too close. Sometimes I AM too close....

I have a high percentage of locale types that are puppy dog tame... unfortunately none of those are the biaks. My Jayas and Arus have all been 100% dependable to work around, although the Arus have a GREAT feed response at night so extra caution is advised.

Thanks for the info. I was definitely considering an Aru or a Jayapura.

They can be temperamental, but can also be laid back, much like carpets. That is during the day At night, they'll tend to greet you teeth first.

The bites really aren't that bad. There are lots of snakes that would be worse to get bitten from. Just don't jerk away if you do get bit, that'll be what causes the most pain and bleeding.

Thanks for the tips. I had read that they are more aggressive at night due to that being their feeding time.

i own a 3 and a half foot long male biak chondro , and he is puppy dog tame , never even came close to biting me ,cept during his shed , and even then he just struck out a few times . i think it has to do w the personality rather then the locale of the snakes. bcuz mine is the exact opposite as to what biaks have been decribed to be , and i know others with animals tame like mine
