Help with feeding

Bret_Hart Jul 27, 2004 04:03 AM

I recently acquired a juvenile Iguana. I purchased various kinds of greens (collard,Mustard, etc.) along with Zoo Med's Juvenile Iguana food. I was told that mixing small pieces of strawberries (for color) with these will make it want to eat them, but it seems all it wants to do is eat the pieces of strawberry. I have tried feeding just greens but he won't touch them. Is there any way to get him to eat his greens?

I always cut the greens into bite sized pieces. Should I leave them in leaf form?

Hi there,

First off, there's much debate on whether the pelleted pre-packaged foods are actually any good. Personally, I doubt that they have any nutritional value, being so processed and so far from what igs eat in the wild. I figure it's better (& cheaper!) to stick to fresh veggies.

As for the greens, the size of them will depend on how big your ig is. The general rule is the pieces should be about the size of your ig's head; though I have a four-footer & she tends to like whole leaves a bit better.

It may take some time for your ig to eat the leafy greens. Try adding some of the other recommended veggies. See the Green Ig Society's food chart. I make a premade salad of squash, green beans, okra, and a piece of fruit, toss the whole thing in the food processor, and store it in a tupperware in the fridge. My ig adores this stuff and will fly off her perch to her "food spot" when she sees me scooping it onto her plate

Best of luck.
