How many RES eggs is too many?

BC-Fern Jul 27, 2004 06:31 AM

Greetings. I have a healthy 20yr old female RES who has been happily laying unfertilised eggs for years. We've seen her through bound eggs, over-calcified eggs, tiny mutant eggs, and lots & lots of very normal eggs. However this summer we've encountered a new situation: too many eggs, or rather way more than the 15-20 we usually get. In fact, she's already laid 30 this year and I wouldn't be surprised if we get some more in the next few weeks. Should we be worried or do you think this is still within the upper limits of 'normal'? I don't want to bring her in for $500 worth of vet exams & tests if it's nothing, but we also don't want her hormones (or anything else) going crazy without our knowledge. Any ideas or valid opinions would be welcome.
Thx.

Doesn't anyone know if 30 eggs is too many? The highest number I've found online is 23 - and my RES was already laying that many a few years ago. Of course, she does stop in the winter but there are typically eggs from April until August - and, as I said in my first post, things could get even worse before the season is over.... So please share your infinite collective wisdom with me because I'm too poor to pay any unnecessary vet bills if my turtle's still doing just fine on her own.

I'm sorry, I don't know if there is such a thing as "too many" eggs. I would say that if your turtle is laying them without difficulty and behaving normally otherwise that I don't see cause for concern. I changed the subject line to try to catch someone else's attention.

Good luck, Nancy
