Fruit Fly Question

FisherCham20 Jul 27, 2004 09:06 AM

I recently bought a fruit fly culture (about a week ago). So far I haven't seen any new fruit flies or larva. Is there something I need to do? Warmer temp? Right now they're at about 78F. They are Hydei. Any tips or suggestions on how to get them to produce faster would be wonderful!!!

Hydei take longer than the smaller Melanogaster's...but tell us what is in the container...do you see little maggot like things moving around ranging from tiny to larger ones? What about little brown things stuck to the side? If you can tell that those little brown things are filled with something, those should hatch out to FF. Also, FF like it cooler, so maybe keep it in a cool place in your home. I keep mine indoors at room temperature which is about 73 degrees.

I'm sure someone can give you more technical info...but mine is all laymans terms.

Like Kristen said, Hydei's take a little longer, it kinda depends on what you got them in.... Ideally, the ones you buy would be a week or two old, and have some sort of production going already.... But whichever type you have you should see maggots within a few days of you getting them, assuming shipping added a few days.... Melanogasters can produce maggots on only about day 4 or 5 in a new culture, give or take depending a bit on temperature. Hydeis you'll see maggots after about 7 days or so.... New flies in about 15-20 days. They are said to do best at cooler room temps (mid 70's) but it seems like they breed faster at warmer temps around 80 or slightly more. I am thinking mine are going really fast and they're warmer than they should be. I like Hydeis for their size, but everything about the smaller flies is better, the speed and the numbers produced in a short amoung of time. Good luck, let me know if you have any more questions about them.
