Silkworm question..

Tigergenesis Jul 27, 2004 11:57 AM

After hatching, how long before they spin cocoons? I only want to keep silkies as feeders (and not breed), but I want to feed them all out before they spin. Thanks!

depending on how much you feed them, takes about two months before they reach the cocooning stage

Wow, thank you. I thought it was much quicker than that. Any particular signs that would indicate that stage is nearing - or would just counting the number of molts (I think I remember hearing 4 molts before they spin) be an indicator? I just want to plan accordingly so I can figure out how many to order and when I have to use them up by before they spin. Thanks!

You can manipulate that a little bit by temperature. They need to be kept 75 to 80 degrees but if you keep them slightly cooler they will develope later.

Do NOT withhold food; all you'll get is dying or inferior caterpillars that are not worth feeding to your reptiles.
