Time for a new snake..any recommendations?

utpike Jul 27, 2004 12:55 PM

Well its time to get another snake but i'm not sure what i want yet. I already have a cal king, w. hognose and a n. watersnake. i'm open for anything but i am looking for something a little different now. mabye a little more colorful as well but something that stays under 8 ft and no morphs. my price range is also under 100 bucks. I wouldn't mind a python/boa but childrens pythons look a little plain and rosy/rubber boas hide too much. I was leaning towards a gray banded or sinaloan/nelsons but thats only because i haven't found anything else. i know i'm limited due to price but its all i can afford right now. any suggestions?

I recommend a garter snake, very easy to care for, and they will get very used to you. They are also very colorful and pretty cheap.

How about a cornsnake, sand boa, rosy boa, Honduran Milksnake or one of the Pits (bullsnake, gopher snake, pine snake)?

Jungle carpet pythons are neat. I have one and she loves to set on her branches. They are arboreal so make a good display snake. They are over your price range however but stay under the 8 foot range. Just a thought...

Have you seen a childrens python in sunlight? Their irridescence is beautiful and "different". Sinaloans are beautiful, as are many kings and milks. In terms of price, cruise the classified ads. Then, when a species attracts your interest and it is in your price range, you can ask about ease of care, temperament, etc. in the corresponding forum. A herp show in your area is another good place to look and ask questions. Best of luck with your decision-making!

Thanks for the suggestions. As far as the garter goes my roomate has two so it's almost like i already have one. I love my hog but i want some variety. I actually haven't taken a good look at childrens pythons but plan on it, and i think carpet pythons are awesome snakes but a little too pricy and still a little bigger than i want to deal with. i frequent the shows in my area but its usually to get cheap feeder mice so i usually don't pay super close attention to the snake/prices. i'm planning on going to the next one to look for something but i wanted to actually have an idea of what i wanted first so i can get all my research done ahead of time. Thanks for all the suggestions. I still think i'm leaning towards a grayband if i can find one that cheap.
