I am glad to hear you will not breed your girls- consider yourself lucky that you don't have to worry about unwanted babies, and stick to two iguanas for a while.

But- Why are you "getting rid of" your ferret?

By the way, neutering a male iguana is not as easy as "snip snip". Reptiles do not respond well to sedation and surgery. Some take years to recover, if they recover at all. Witness the posts about Beanie, Linda's iguana. She is still not eating much on her own.

The general guideline is that if it is not an emergency, do not cut the lizard open or sedate it. Even for humans, opening the abdominal cavity is one of the most difficult things to recover from. Imagine what it's like for an animal that heals at a fraction of our efficiency.

Espio how old are you.. i think you should stick to the pets you have.. you have two iggs now that you are haviong trouble with keeping healthy.. why add another one?

also why get rid of teh ferret? you need to think before you get another one.. there is alot of consideration that needs to go into getting another igg.. and i am going throught it now.

you need to think it through.. you already need to large cages for your iggs now. do you have the space for another one?

And just because we said that there are iggs that need homes doesnt mean that we told you to go get another one..

Another thing is you don't have to get it fixed because you won't be able to keep him together with the females anyway. He will hurt them. I'd carefully think hard about getting another one. I have 4 iggys and am about to get one more. I am only getting this new one because they will kill it if no one takes it. I haven't even seen it or know anything about it. Luckily someone is giving me a reptaruim to house it in or I wouldn't be able to take it. Then I have to buy all the stuff it needs. Are you getting rid of the ferret to make room for the new iguana? How are your other iggys doing?

Espio-and-Lizzie Jul 27, 2004 10:05 PM

yeah i am getting rid of the ferret because i have had him for a month and he is a pain in the ass to maintain he craps about 10 times a day!!!!! I have no trouble with iguanas. the 2 are doing amazing now-the vet was amazed how good they looked!! So i think i can handle another thats why i wish some1 would tell me where i could get a male around that size (give or take 5 or 6 inches)../..........can some1 tell me where i can get an ig like that shipped to me? please can some1 tell me. I don't care if you guys don't think i am ready-when i went to the vet topday i asked him if he thought i could handle another and he said yes.

Nick, what makes you think anybody here is going to tell you where to get another iguana?!?!? Everyone is telling you over and over again it would be a bad idea, but you simply refuse to listen because you are too caught up in "I want, I want". It's like the little kid with his fingers in his ears going, "La-la-la" until you hear something you want to hear. You act like a child and behave in a way that scares me to think you are in charge of another living creature. You got a ferret, and want to dump it in a month because it craps 10 times a day?!?!?!?? What are you going to do when you have two 5-6' iguanas (if they live that long) that are crapping ten times as much as your ferret in one go? Throw them out in the street too?!?!?! Caring for iguanas correctly is certainly more difficult than caring for a ferret. And you certainly don't sound mature enough to be caring for what you got.

first of all, if you cant handle a cute fuzzy ferret, how do you exspect to handle a 5 foot moody sharp clawed reptile? their poop is as big as my dogs! iguanas are not easy to care for. they need daily care and attention. cages need to be disinfected weekly, poo needs to be cleaned out as soon as they go,they need to be bathed, nails trimed, taken to the vet , taken outside for natural sunlight. i have two full grown iguanas, and one young one. they take up alot of time. and by your attitude id say your still a kid and go to school. are you going to have time for all this? i know you want another because you love the ones you have, but they are still young, and you have yet to know what its like to have a full grown ig. id say wait till they grow up. who knows maybe youll find that these igs are "a pain in the ass" too. and youll end up "getting rid" of them also. no one here wants that and that is y no one is going to tell you where to find an ig.

Ive got 2 ferrets and 1 ig, and they are lower maintence then my iguana. I can't imagine 3 iguanas being less work/money/space/etc then 1 ferret. Have you ever even held an adult iguana?

I agree with the others you really need to think this through. You have two iggys allready, but they are small, just wait till they get bigger, they are much harder to care for, i think anyway. Mine is about 3 ft long now. The other thing you really need to think about is the cost. Do you have a means to pay for all this. I mean i know my Ozzy cost me a fortune. Ozzys cage alone cost me hmmm about 150, and that was with hubby building it for me. Then lighting oh my, i spend a fourtune on lighting for him. And then feeding. Ok its not all that expensive, cause i grow most of his food in the summer especially, but its so time consuming. I spend a average of a couple hours a week preping ozzys food. But if you look where i posted about his diet you will see he gets a wide variety of foods. Ok now you also need to figure in vet bills, im sure you know how expensive that is since you just took them. Ok and ozzys cage is 6ft by 4t, he is 3ft, this cage will need to be enlarged eventually. In my opinion a full grow ig needs at least a 6ft by 6ft enclosure. So do you have room for 3 cages that size? And i will agree with the others a ferret is a piece of cake to care for compaired to a ig. Actually most animials are. I have a cat, a dog, in the past i had a cockatiel, a chinchilla, large fish tank, etc, and the iguana is by far the most difficult to care for and most expensive. My newest item on my wish list is a fogger for ozzys cage, that will be another 30-40 dollars. So really you need to think this through if you will have the money and time to care for these animals. I work part time and its tough to spend the required amount of time with ozzy. Personally i just feel if your not going to do this right, dont do it at all. Just my opinion. Hope that gives you some things to consider. Tami

I have been watching these posts and I think you are acting
very irresponsibly! A ferret is a piece of cake when compared to
even one 4-6'ig. I would also like to know how old you are.
I currently have 2 igs of my own and I am fostering a 3rd
until September. I am a responsible adult and even though
I would love to keep this little foster I know that I would
not be able to give it the extra care it deserves. You are
taking on more than you should too early. Remember everything
will change as these guys get bigger and if you continue on
this course you are making a very big mistake.

Love the igs you have and spend the time with them as they
grow up. You have plenty of time to get another one if you
find you truly have the space, money and time.

Espio, of course you know that iguanas are solitary and dont necessarily like company...even 2 girls can get territorial and fight and cause big injuries...having the male fixed wont mean you can keep them together....you shouldnt plan on keeping them together at all even the 2 girls...plan on 2 huge separate cages...Lyn

First off, I think you are doing the right thing to find a home for your ferret if you are not happy with it and cannot properly care for it. I am a member of a pretty big ferret forum and would be happy to put up a post for you if you let me know the ferret's age, sex, color, and your general location. The board is private so I cannot give you the address to have you post yourself.

Second, Ferrets are not easy to care for. They are extremely high maintenance pets. I have 6 Ferrets. Ferrets require daily feeding, daily watering, daily socializing, daily cage cleaning, weekly nail trimming, and annual vet visits. If you are not able to provide these things than you are definitely doing the right thing to find him a home. The poop issue is due to poor quality food. If you feed good food they don't poop 10 times a day. If they did then I'd be cleaning up 60 poops a day and I'm not. Not even close. I feed Totally Ferret and Zupreeme. You might want to pick some up while you are waiting for him to get a home so that you can cut down on the poop.

That said, Iguanas need ALL of the above PLUS daily mistings and/or soakings and a much more labor intensive feeding. To feed my ferrets I simply scoop out their food and fill the bowl. To feed an iggy involves alot of chopping and cutting. Plus weekly trips to the grocery store to pick up the food.

I feel that the care requirements timewise and moneywise for Ferrets and Iggys is about the same. Some things Ferrets need more of, some things Iggys need more of.

As for getting another Iggy, I don't see the point in even commenting. You are going to do what you want regardless of what anyone here has to say. So I will bite my tongue on that topic.
