When you order a vial of fruit flys, how long will this last/produce? Do you need anything else, or do you leave the FFs in the vial and they reproduce? Where is the best place to get fruit flys? Thanks!

fruitflies don't live too long...they start to breed the day after they are born and will die in a week or so...they will breed in the medium they come in but the yeild is low...i've used www.herpfood.com several times and am happy with the service...if you want to breed your own fruitflies you'll need brewers yeast (vitamin store), potato flakes, confectioners sugar, bakers yeast and methalyne blue (sp) which is a perservative...i warn you that breeding them yourself can be a pain..
check out the dart frog forum as fruitfly questions are asked on a daily basis....personally i would breed crickets if you need a small prey item...so much easier
I got pretty confused when I read this.... Fruit flies are a pain? I don't think I've ever seen an insect easier and faster to breed than a fruit fly. Hydeis will live for about a month, and Melanogasters live for about 3 weeks. I have kept large numbers of them for a long time, and have recently been shipping them to several people, including members of this forum.... But I always considered them easy as cake to keep and breed, far far easier than crickets or silkworms. Maybe you're thinking houseflies???

they smell, you make thousands more than you ever need, the cultures mold, when your cat knocks over a mayo jar with them in it you have thousands crawling up your walls...i raised fruitflies for a couple of years for my dart and mantella frogs and i guess i just am burned out on fruitflies and will be happy to never see one again
