Fruit Fly question?

micky-kennie Jul 27, 2004 07:24 PM

When you order a vial of fruit flys, how long will this last/produce? Do you need anything else, or do you leave the FFs in the vial and they reproduce? Where is the best place to get fruit flys? Thanks!

I think mine lasted 2 or 3 months. You don't need anything else unless you plan on keeping the culture going. If you don't want to order again and want to get your own cuture going, you will need vials and culture medium. There are several home made mixture recipies available but I tried them and I ended up with mold so it may be worth it to get the pro stuff along with the flies.

There are several places to order from but the only experience (which was a good one) I have is with http://www.livefoodcultures.com/ There is some good info there as well. Think about going with the bigger D. Hydei. They are easier to handle and they aren't really big.

Yes, they will keep reproducing on their own in the vial until the culture is depleted. If you plan on using the flies for your own culture, don't wait too long to start it in case of failures. I tried my own with the last 20 or so flies and by the time I got mold, I had no more flies to try again. Good luck.
